Skill-sharing/Talk on Trans* Experiences in the Music Scene

Animal House Productions & The Lancaster LGBTQ + Coalition Presents

Tuesday, October 22nd, 2019 | Skill-sharing/Talk on Trans* Experiences in the Music Scene | Facilitated by Maja of Queers to the front Booking

Discussion: “Trans*women in the punk scene – between hyper-masculine Hardcore bands and toplessness space often grows small for gender-nonconforming individuals, even though especially the punk scene should be an ideal space for free expression and diversity. Maja as trans*woman that spent most of her life as a cis-man studied unique impressions of the vacuum between unambiguously male structures, pseudo-liberal venues, and queer-feminist utopias.

From the topless live photo at age 15 in the local newspaper to a tour manager for queer, feminist artists – there’s much development to speak about: The split between the fondness of Hardcore-Punk and the longing for femininity, mansplaining, estrogens and the difficulty to make an existence within an anti-capitalist scene sustainable.

Maja wants to provide insight into gender roles within the punk scene, share skills and speak about her development into professionally operating a political tour service. Together with you, Maja would like to contextualize experiences into political structures and learn from each other.

Maja operates her international tour service “Queers to the front Booking” and puts on DIY shows in Germany. She identifies as trans*female and uses the pronouns ‘she/her’.”

The evening will conclude with a Q&A w/ Maja followed by music performances by Beth Munroe Music.

Beth Munroe is a DIY london-based Indietronica artist, guitarist, vocalist, synth player, loop artist and producer. Using soulful vocals and thoughtful lyrics alongside guitar, synth, samples and loops to create an ambient wall of sound.

The Body, (Portland, Oregon)
(Thrill Jockey Records)
www.thebody.bandcamp.com
The Body consisting of Lee Buford and Chip King, are outliers at their core, observing the world as if apart from it. They strive for music without a category. They embody many contrasts. They are open and playful as well as thoughtful and disciplined. Live, they deliver punishing volume and scale with their spare duo set up, expanding their sound through a complex set of effects on both guitar and drums. For records, they approach things entirely differently and expand their group in the studio to include Seth Manchester and Keith Souza from Machines with Magnets (their long-time studio), as well as Chrissy Wolpert of The Assembly of Light Choir. The list of instruments used on No One Deserves Happiness is an unexpected collection that includes 808 drum machine, a cello, and a trombone. The band employs instruments in their unprocessed state for the simple beauty of the sound, and then in equal measure push them to their most extreme (for example, the sounds at the end of “The Fall and the Guilt” are created by a guitar and a cello). Because they create an entirely singular sound, The Body is in high demand for collaborations with artists across the musical spectrum, from The Bug to Full of Hell to The Haxan Cloak and beyond. They build albums that are as lush and dense as a rainforest and as unforgiving.

Valley Queen, (Los Angeles, California)
The full-length debut from Los Angeles-based band Valley Queen, Supergiant takes its title from the most massive and luminous yet fastest-burning stars in the universe. “The song ‘Supergiant’ is about how we’re all made up of the same stuff as stars, and I liked the idea of tying the whole album together with that metaphor,” says Carol. “It takes all the drama you hear on the record—the aggressive, chaotic moments, and the more beautiful or quieter moments—and puts it all into a more galactic perspective.”

Andrea Gibson, (Boulder, Colorado) is hitting the road in 2018 in support of their new album, HEY GALAXY, and new pocketbook, TAKE ME WITH YOU.
One of the most celebrated and successful poets in the field began their career in 1999 with a break-up poem at an open mic in Boulder, Colorado. Gibson then leaped into the forefront of spoken word poetry on the national scene in 2008 when they won the first-ever Woman of the WorldPoetry Slam. Author of three collections of poetry and currently working on an illustrated collection of their most memorable quotes for Penguin (Winter 2018), Andrea (they/them/their) has also released seven (7) full-length albums.
The most recent album, HEY GALAXY (Fall2017) was created in the midst of another project as a result of the current political upheaval in the United States. Gibson was working on an album entirely about love, accompanied by an orchestra, but after the 2016 presidential election, they felt moved to put forth a more social justice-oriented project. “There’s a quote that says, ‘Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.’ I wanted to do that. I wanted to make something political and human and gutsy in its revolt. Something beautiful in its sweetness and rage and vulnerability.Something loud and tender at the same time.”

Kaki King: The Neck is a Bridge to the Body at ABC

Kaki King: The Neck is A Bridge to the Body
A provocative and moving, surprising and beautiful, “The Neck Is A Bridge To The Body” is Kaki King at her visionary best: deconstructing and redefining the role of solo instrumental artist though virtuoso technique, insatiable imagination, and boundless humanity. This groundbreaking new multi-media performance uses projection mapping to present the guitar as an ontological tabula rasa in a creation myth unlike any other, where luminous visions of genesis and death, textures, and skins, are cast onto an Ovation Adamas 1581-KK Kaki King Signature 6-String Acoustic guitar customized specifically for this production.

Today she is one of the most sought out touring solo-guitarists. Over the past 13 years the Brooklyn-based artist has released 8 extraordinarily diverse and distinctive albums, performed with such icons as Foo Fighters, Timbaland, and The Mountain Goats, contributed to a variety of film and TV soundtracks including “August Rush” and Sean Penn’s “Into the Wild”, for which received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score.

Suzi Brown, (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania)
Singer/songwriter Suzi Brown has found herself on a musical journey, from playing coffee shops, wineries, and theaters to studio work on her full-length album "Siren Song." She has collaborated with Producer Pier Giacalone (Regina Spektor and Sloan Wainwright); drummer Rodney Holmes (Carlos Santana and Steve Kimock); and keyboardist Arne Wendt (Bon Jovi). Suzi has opened for Sixpence None the Richer and co-billed with the Indigo Girls at the Wild Goose Festival as well as co/billed with Keller Williams at the Frozen Harbor Festival.

Suzi’s music is a variety of cultural styles encompassing Celtic, Asian, Island, and tribal beats with traditional folk/pop.  People have called her “the two-handed orchestra" due to the unique two-hand tapping technique that she employs with her guitar. Weaving together her storytelling abilities and a unique instrumental talent, her rhythm strikes a familiar chord in the listener.  From lyrics that will leave you with a reminiscent smile to serious topics about the issues surrounding the current times, Suzi's songs are both easy to sing along to and hard to forget.
